Sharp fall in number of offers at IITs this year

KOLKATA: The number of job offers has dwindled sharply at some of the country's top technology campuses in the first phase of the recruitment process.The IITs at Kharagpur, Kanpur and Roorkee have registered a significant slump in recruitments. At IIT-Mumbai, Madras and Guwahati, the number of total offers has gone up, but offers per company have been fewer than previous years. Large recruiters like Coal India, Microsoft and Goldman Sachs have particularly been conservative in handing out letters.

At IIT-Kharagpur, the number of offers has come down to 1,080 from 1,300 last year while IIT-Kanpur has seen the number fall to 725 from 800 in 2016.

India Inc, both public and private, though have not directly linked the trend to demonetisation, but there is indication that most of them have chosen to adopt a wait-and-watch policy in the face of lower growth forecast for this fiscal. "Companies which have reduced the offers have informed the institute that it is due to the global slowdown," said a member of the All-IIT Placement Committee.

The HR director at Coal India, R Mohandas, admitted that the Maharatna PSU had made only 290 offers at this year's IIT placements against 450 last year. "We will hire a lot of people from the open market this year, so the number of campus recruitment is less," Mohandas told TOI. Tech giant Microsoft, till now a prolific recruiter at the IITs, has picked up significantly lesser number of students during this year's placements. The company has made only nine offers at IIT Kharagpur against last year's 25, six at IIT Kanpur against 21 last year and 17 at IIT Roorkee against 30 last year. At IIT Madras, the company has made 10 offers, in addition to six pre-placement offers against 22 last year.

However, when contacted, a Microsoft spokesperson said, the company's "pace of hiring from IITs has remained steady and the momentum continued across IIT campuses this year as well".

Debashis Deb, the chairperson of the placement cell at IIT-Kharagpur, said one reason for the slump in offers could be the absence of startups at the placements this year. "Besides, more IIT campuses organized placements and the number of offers could have gotten distributed," he reasoned.

At IIT Rookee, where the total number of offers has gone down to 700 from last year's 740, a placement co-ordinator rued the absence of bigtime recruiter Google.
At IIT-Madras, a placement coordinator admitted that while offers have gone up this year, several companies had reduced the number of intake. Last year, placements were seriously affected due to the ravaging floods.

"Many companies which had hired in huge numbers from the campus last year, like Boston Consultancy Group, Goldman Sachs and Microsoft, have radically cut the number of recruits. This year, many of these companies have opted for pre-placement offers instead of coming to the campus and holding interviews.

Those students who had already joined them as interns were given full-time placement offers.Since many of these companies had recruited in large numbers last year, they may not have any opening this year," he said.

At IIT Guwahati, the number of offers has gone up from 455 last year to 500 this year despite popular companies reducing their intake.

"This was largely because companies like Cognizant and Samsung recruited in large numbers," said a placement coordinator.

As we bid goodbye to the year 2016, it is time to reflect on how the education sector has fared over the past 12 months.

Education is the foundation on which the next generation is going to chart out its future, and how today’s students turn out will determine the quality of life of parents and teachers, who will be the senior citizens of tomorrow.

Technology-based teaching at school levels, surprisingly, did not see any significant increase, although dozens of innovative apps were put on the market this year. In fact, the concept of computerised smart boards in classrooms actually saw a decline from the previous years. Face-to-face connect with teachers still seems to be the preferred form of interaction.

However, on the other hand, this year saw a proliferation of both school and college students using various apps to help them with their studies. This has also created a dilemma in the minds of parents who do not know whether to give smart phones to their children as learning aids for studies, or to restrict usage fearing that they may get addicted to gaming and social media.

Different perspective

For the first time, parents have started questioning whether engineering is the most lucrative profession of all. On the other hand, newer branches of engineering such as robotics, nanotechnology, aerospace or artificial intelligence are attracting more students.
The field of medicine saw intense confusion for months this year, regarding the uncertainty between NEET and CET entrance exams, but thankfully matters have been sorted out and those aspiring to become doctors will have to appear only for NEET exam (except some specific institutions). Unfortunately, there has not been any marked increase in the number of medical colleges, making admission into MBBS highly competitive. Pure Sciences have started attracting more and more students, with a large increase in candidates appearing for undergraduate courses. Job opportunities in private sector have also increased this year.

More options

Wider choices in Boards are being offered to students with more schools getting affiliated to IGCSE and IB Boards. This includes new schools that opened this year and existing schools who are now offering these alternatives to students who earlier were doing CBSE, ICSE or SSLC only.

Similarly, enrolments for National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) went up this year. In fact, NIOS now has the largest number of students enrolled for various courses all over the country, and the Karnataka Regional Centre has been very active in helping students whose needs are different.

The attraction for Boards such as IGCSE and IB is largely among students who wish to go abroad for their undergraduate studies. International schools and education consultants are offering attractive openings for students to study abroad. Proposed ASTI likely to function from Berhampur ITI

Berhampur (Odisha): The proposed Advance Skill Development Training Institute (ASTI), Berhampur, is likely to function on a temporary basis from the premises of Industrial Training Institute (ITI) here from February next year.
A nine-member expert team of the funding agency, Asian Development Bank (ADB), visited the ITI on Wednesday for inspection of its infrastructure.

"We are prepared to spare space for functioning of the ASTI on ITI campus. During the discussion with us, the ADB mission appeared satisfied with the existing infrastructure facilities," ITI principal Rajat Panigrahi said.
The government has earmarked five acres in front of the ITI here for construction of the permanent campus of the ASTI. The construction of the building and other facilities for the institute will take two years.

The temporary campus of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Berhampur, started functioning from the ITI campus this year.
To impart skill training to around two lakh youths in the next five years, the state government has decided to set up six ASTIs in different places of the state. Besides Berhampur, the other places selected are Rourkela, Ambaguda (Koraput), Jharsuguda, Bhubaneswar (Gandamunda) and Balangir.

The five ASTIs will also function from ITIs. The government has called a meeting of the principals of the ITIs for further discussion in Bhubaneswar on Saturday, official sources said.
Most advanced skill development and industry-oriented training will be imparted in the ASTIs. Two lakh youths will be trained at a cost of Rs 1,050-crore. Out of it, the state government would provide one-third and the rest amount would be availed from ADB as
loan, the sources said.

The Odisha Skill Development Society would be the nodal agency for implementation of the project. Besides ITI passouts, other target groups to receive advanced skill development training are unemployed IT graduates, unemployed engineers and general graduates and polytechnic graduates, they said.
