Chandigarh: Accused in criminal cases either under trial or convicted, Burail jail inmates may have been serving imprisonment behind the bars but the jail authorities are providing them an opportunity to continue with their life. As many as 412 inmates have been perusing certificate courses and bachelor and master degree programmes in the past three years.
According to sources, the Model Jail of Burail, which has around 800 inmates and among them around 50 per cent are convicts, while other 50 per cent are undertrials.
Giving an opportunity to continue with their studies even while in jail, the jail authorities have been arranging admissions for the inmates. In the year 2013-14, 150 inmates did seven certificate courses, attended four different bachelor and eight different master degree programmes.
Meanwhile, in the year 2014-15, 84 jail inmates did six certificate courses, attended five different bachelor and four different master degree programmes and similarly, in 2015-16, 178 inmates did 10 certificate courses, attended four different bachelor degree and six different master degree programmes.
Apart from this, 142 jail inmates also attended classes from Class I to VIII in the three years from 2013-16 whereas 27 inmates passed Classes X and XII in the academic year 2015-16.
Amandeep Singh, DSP, Burail Jail, said, “We make announcements in the jail before the beginning of the academic year. Those inmates who are interested to continue with their studies are given the opportunity.”
The examinations for the certificate course, bachelors degree programme and master degree programme are conducted by Indira Gandhi National Open University, while the school-level examinations are conducted by the National Open School.
