MBBS students to protest against NEXT exam tomorrow

MBBS students from across the state will protest on Wednesday opposing to the proposed National Exit Test (NEXT). The students will be joined by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).

NEXT is part of the proposal mooted by the Union Health Ministry as part of the amendments to be introduced in the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Act. According to the proposal, students are mandated to clear NEXT to obtain licence to practice.

Students believe that taking an entrance exam in addition to their MBBS exams would be taxing. Dr Manoop Kumaraswamy, member, Young Doctors’ Association, IMA said, "What is the necessity for an exam when we are already preparing for NEET PG? Students will have to clear yet another exam. Instead, the government can just refine the existing system. Besides, we are told that even Ayush doctors clearing this exam will be granted permission to prescribe allopathy medicines after a bridge course.”

Dr Rajashekara Bellary, president, IMA Karnataka said, "Those who have cleared MBBS are expected to take the exam. What is the use of having studied the course for five-and-a-half years then? It is an unnecessary burden on students. Students will also lose faith in the system of study then.”

In a memorandum, the students have said, "The examinations are conducted by universities which are recognised by University Grants Commission and MBBS examination is therefore rightfully a qualifying examination for the degree of Modern Medicine. Therefore, introducing NEXT as a qualifying examination is unnecessary and makes the university examination redundant.”

They also say that converting a competitive examination into both a qualifying examination and competitive examination for post graduation is not in the students’ interest as the structure and objective of a qualifying examination for admission to post graduation is different from a qualifying examination that is meant for assessing the minimum qualification required to receive the degree.

The chief engineer of the mission to Mars offers his top two tips for young people.
Adam Steltzner never imagined he would be the chief engineer of NASA's mission to Mars. He was a mediocre student in high school and he disliked physics. He wanted to pursue music and theater.
But one glance at the night sky changed that.
"I got curious," the rocket scientist tells Todd Henry on the podcast "The Accidental Creative."
Steltzner, then 21 years old, "followed [that curiosity] down to the local community college to take an astronomy course."
He didn't know what he would major in, how far he would pursue his education or even his career trajectory, he explains in his book "The Right Kind of Crazy." The future rocket scientist just knew he was interested.
Several years later, he earned a doctorate in engineering and landed a job at NASA, where he served as a lead engineer of the Mars Exploration Curiosity Rover mission.

His best career advice is for young professionals to follow their own curiosity and reject the urge to have their entire career path figured out right away.
"It's impossible for me to imagine that you could understand what's going on, all the twists and turns you want to take, at 20 or frankly even 30," he says.
And that's coming from someone who probably doesn't use the word "impossible" lightly, since he helps explore Mars for a living.
Steltzner helped develop the sky crane method, an engineering feat that allowed the heavy rover, traveling at more than 620 miles per hour, to land intact on Mars.

"I would recommend to someone who's in their 20s and feeling stagnant to look inside themselves and see where the joy comes from," he says.
Of course, changing careers or making other big professional moves is not possible for everyone in their 20s. But even having a hobby that interests you can benefit your career, studies show. And you can try incorporating that interest into your job by proposing new work projects.
"Fear locks us in so frequently, or locks me in so frequently," Steltzner says. "Don't be afraid."

Amazon India to create over 7,500 temporary jobs before sale

New Delhi: Amazon.in will create well over 7,500 temporary jobs for its upcoming sale, and these positions will mostly be in logistics to ensure smooth deliveries. Amazon.in will host its ‘Great Indian Sale’ between 20-22 January 2017.

“We have opened more than 7,500 seasonal roles for our upcoming Great Indian Sale. These roles will be available at 27 Fulfilment Centres (FCs), over 100 delivery stations and close to 15 sort centres across the country,” Amazon India Vice President – India Customer Fulfilment Akhil Saxena said. He added that throughout the year, Amazon.in generates thousands of seasonal job opportunities, as well as opportunities for long term career development.

“Recruitment for seasonal roles is now underway and will be trained for the upcoming sale. We are excited to welcome these new personnel,” he said.

Locked in an intense battle for leadership in the Indian e-commerce market with local rivals like Flipkart and Snapdeal, Amazon.in has aggressively invested in expanding its infrastructure and delivery capabilities. Free skills training for unemployed youth to be launched shortly

Thanjavur: The Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation (TNSDC) is all set to launch a free training programme of short-term courses for unemployed youth on various trades.

The training would be provided through the private skill training institutes, known as training providers.

Hitherto, the task of selecting the candidates had been entrusted with the training providers. Unlike in the past, the candidates now will be directly selected by the District Employment Office of the respective district.

For this, TNSDC has approved 263 trades, including beautician, automobile, textile, refrigeration and air conditioning, and manufacture of leather products.
“The objective of providing these short-term courses is to help the candidates to enhance his/her skill and make them employable in the private sector,” said K Kalaichelvan, Deputy Director of Employment, District Employment Office, Thanjavur.

The targeted group is any person having passed a minimum of Class 8 and above. The duration of the short-term course is 13 days to three months depending upon the trade. At the rate of four hours per day, the candidate will be provided training up to 144 hours. The training will be given free of charge.

As for Thanjavur district, training will be provided on six trades, including beautician, tailoring, sewing machine operator, tourism and travel executive, and accounting. We have shortlisted 16 training providers, Kalaichelvan said.
“As for the quality of training, no compromise will be made. Biometric attendance is mandatory for candidates. At the end of the training, 70 per cent of the candidates will be placed in the private sector. We will also rope in the services of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), BHEL, Tiruchy, and the Indian Road Transport Training Institute located at Kumbakonam,” he stated.

In the first phase, 120 candidates have so far expressed willingness to undergo training in Thanjavur district. The training will be launched shortly, Kalaichelvan added.

Odisha OAVS recruitment 2017: 1165 principal, teacher posts available, apply now

The Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya Sangathan (OAVS) has released the applications for principal and teaching posts in the state. Interested candidates can register online from the official OAVS website before February 9, 2017, after which the registrations will be closed.

Teachers to retire at 62

Jan. 27: The government today issued an order raising the retirement age of permanent teachers of universities and principals and teachers of state-aided colleges from 60 to 62. Librarians and graduate laboratory instructors working in universities and colleges and enjoying teaching status and equivalent regular government pay scale will retire at 62 as well. The rule will apply to those who were in service on January 1 and are scheduled to retire on or after January 31.

Students lose sleep over SSC question paper leak

Kakinada: The alleged involvement of corporate institutions in the leakage of SSC question paper, set for the half-yearly exam just days before the conduct of exams has become a cause of concern in the Kakinada district.
The issue holds significance in the backdrop of marks scored in a particular paper will carry 20 per cent weightage in the SSC examinations to be conducted in March 2017.
Following the news of leakage of SSC paper, Vidya Vignana Vedika(VVV), a social organisation that supports the cause of education has expressed concern over the future of students of government, ZP, municipal and aided schools in the district.
The paper leakage happened solely due to a nexus between the corporate institutions and officials in the education department, blamed VVV.
The fate of 60,000 plus students who are appearing for the SSC 2017 exams is hanging in balance and students of corporate and private school managements will benefit out of this paper leakage, said VVV.
Clinical competence evaluation (CCE) exams are conducted every year under the aegis of District Common Examination Board (DCEB).
However, in the present academic year 2016-17, the SERT mode has come into force for class X and VIII and IX classes are going to be brought under the SERT mode next academic year onwards.
The whole concept behind this programme is to provide 20 percept weightage in SSC examinations every year class VIII onwards.
Subject exam papers of languages, mathematics, physical sciences, biological sciences, and social studies are opened much in advance by corporate schools in violation of the norm of opening the paper bundle few minutes before the conduct of examination.
This practice gives room to circulation of paper to all the xerox centers in the district and through mobile messages.
There are allegations that a corporate school management in Samarlakota in the district is said to be behind the leakage issue.
AP’s VVV convener K Satti Raju alleged that corporate school managements are jeopardizing the interests of thousands of students and it is the colleges under the private management are going to be benefitted by 20 percent weightage.
Reacting to the paper leakage, DEO, R Narasimha Rao said on Friday that the leakage occurred outside the district and it does not come under the education department’s purview.
When his attention was drawn to the origin of leakage from Samarlakota in the district, the DEO assured that an enquiry will be ordered in the leakage issue.

Jawaharlal Nehru University Hikes Fees For Entrance Examinations

Aspirants to New Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University will now have to pay more money to appear for the institute's entrance examination as the fees have been increased by 27 per cent from the upcoming academic session.
According to officials of the varsity's admission department, a decision in this regard was taken at a recent meeting of the Academic Council followed by the Executive Council.
However, the hike will not be applicable to candidates of reserved categories including Schedules Castes, Scheduled Tribes, physically differently-abled and Below Poverty Line candidates.
"The fees for the entrance examinations have been increased after 13 years. Prior to this, the fees structure was revised in 2003," an official told PTI.
"The General Category, Other Backward Classes students and applicants from abroad will also have to pay according to the new fees structure," he added.
Earlier, the application fees for BA programme was Rs. 420 and for choosing one and additional programmes was Rs. 630 and 800 respectively. Now, the same has been hiked upto Rs. 530, Rs. 800 and Rs. 1,000.
Similarly, the fees for MPhil, MTech, MSc, MCA, MA and PhD programmes, which were Rs. 300, have now been increased to Rs. 400.
For additional disciplines, the candidates will have to pay Rs. 575 and Rs. 750 respectively.
