Samsung facility at Govt. ITI

MP K. Haribabu on Saturday said Samsung had decided to invest ₹60 lakh on a new facility at Government ITI, Kancharapalem in the city to train youth to provide them employment opportunities.
He was speaking to reporters after inaugurating a job mela organised by him in association with Synchro Serve Skill Development Institute at his office near Kailasagiri. The mela evoked a big response with 25 companies including ICICI, Paytm, Genpact, Tech Mahindra and Apollo Pharma, participating with job offers in BPO, marketing, logistics, finance and sales. Hundreds of youth including masters and engineer degree holders took part.
He said Samsung would also invest in labs and e-class rooms at the ITI. It will absorb 70 to 80% of students. Each batch will have intake of 20 students. Samsung will also train the teachers of ITI. The ITI has also signed MoU with Matuti and Toyota for offering jobs in painting and denting.
Stating that the Centre had created a separate ministry for skill development and entrepreneurship due to twin strategy of skill upgradation and increasing employment quotient of youth, he said their initiative led to employment of 90% of 115 10th pass-out tribal students from Paderu and Araku Valley in a mobile phone company at Sri City.
Mr. Haribabu said holding job melas at his office was a regular affair and they had been conducting such programmes several times during past three years. He said they had also created database of employers looking for locals for recruitment.

A chemistry genius

As the first woman from JNTU to receive the Royal Society of Chemistry award, A Jayashree requests more students to foray into research.

Prof A. Jayashree, Director of Institute of Science and Technology (IST) and Head, Centre for Chemical Sciences and Technology (CCST), JNTU, Hyderabad, was recently awarded the prestigious Royal Society of Chemistry, London. Jayashree has received this award for her contributions in the field of academia (Science). She is the first woman from the JNTU University to receive the award.
“The honour has made me more responsible now and I feel what I have contributed so far is little,” says the Prof. “This is only a recognition for my contributions in the field of science and technology, in the form of publishing papers, organising national and international conferences and spreading the awareness and inspiring the students towards research in science, for the last 30 years,” she elaborates, adding, “So, the award has encouraged me to further inspire students to take up research in science education.”
What does the honour signify? “Since I am a fellow of the Royal Society, we can now access their vast database — journals, articles, papers, thesis and books of renowned professors, etc.”
Apparently, it was her father who inspired her to take up teaching. “I was married in my first year of post-graduation, but I have struggled a lot to balance my personal and professional life. I was very enthusiastic about research and hence pursued Ph.D., in molecular modelling, extraction, synthesis and biological activity, screening (invitro, invivo and exvivo) of medicinally important natural products.”
Jayashree feels that a majority of students are into professional courses — Engineering or Medicine, but not into research. “The challenge is to motivate students to pursue research in Universities. There’s a severe dearth of students in research. We have to nurture the need to pursue research among students so that the field of science and technology is not neglected. We need to come up with industry-oriented curriculums and state of the art infrastructure. Fortunately, students in JNTU are exposed to both — technology and infrastructure.”
She further explains that the student count in research is on a constant decline. “I guess there’s a growing need to introduce fellowships for M.Sc. students just like in M.Tech, so that it’ll motivate students to join this line. Also, job-oriented courses should be introduced so that our industrial sector grows,” says Jayashree.

University of Hyderabad scores high on research performance

Hyderabad: In a recent study conducted on the research performance of 39 central universities across India, University of Hyderabad has fared fairly well.
The study used indicators such as total papers, total citations data and computed average citation per paper. University of Hyderabad had total papers amounting to 2481 and total citations were 12,836.
Delhi University (DU) topped the list with 5539 papers and 28,535 citations. On an average DU and UoH have one paper per year per faculty.
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and University of Hyderabad (UoH) are amongst the toppers as per many indicators.
The study used data from 25 years of analysis from 1990-2014 and observed that about 65% of the total output of central universities during the 25-year-period is contributed by the four older universities-DU, Banaras Hindu University, Aligarh Muslim University and UoH.
If the last five-year period is assessed, the total contribution of these four universities is about 60%. It was also noted in the study that smaller universities like UoH fared better in research performance.
Other universities in the city like the English and Foreign Language University and Maulana Azad National Urdu University had papers totaling to the amounting of 22 and 2 respectively. Total citations of the two universities were at 11 and 1.
Additionally another survey has placed UoH amongst the top 2.3% of the 23000 plus universities in the world. The report was published in Current Science.

Hire teachers on part-time deal, says Government

In districts where PSC rank list was live, part-time teachers should be appointed from that list.

Thiruvananthapuram: As the staff fixation has not been completed in government schools for the year 2017-2018, the government has issued an order to hire teachers on daily wages basis till the PSC appointment is held. It specifies that primary teachers on daily wages should be paid Rs 850 with a maximum of Rs 24,650 while part-time high school assistant should be paid Rs 975 with a cap of Rs 29,200 a month. For part-time language teachers in secondary schools, the daily wages has been fixed at Rs 675, with a ceiling of Rs 18,900 while part-time language teachers in high school will be paid Rs 650 as daily wages.
In districts where PSC rank list was live, part-time teachers should be appointed from that list. However, they would not be eligible for any service benefits based on this appointment when they get a regular appointment from the PSC list. The staff fixation was to be held on the basis of the student strength in the sixth-day verification. The process had been completed on Friday. The statistics proved that there was a total of 36, 80,740 students in state syllabus schools which meant an increase of 1, 57,406 from last year. Now the general education department would have to fix the number of teachers to be appointed by this student strength. These vacancies have to be reported to the PSC before the appointment.
